The Power Fantasy - REVIEW

Image
The Power Fantasy , penned by Kieron Gillen , illustrated by Caspar Wijngaard , and published by Image Comics , is a truly unique breed of Superhero comic. In a genre rooted in pulpy action and colorful combat, Gillen has created a story in which anything even close to that can lead to a doomsday scenario at the hands of the main cast, “The Superpowers”. On an unfortunately snowy November in 2024, I found myself skimming Gillen’s Wikipedia bibliography. I needed a new fictional fix after riding the musical high of The Wicked + The Divine . At the bottom of his Image publications list was the then-barely-4-issues-deep comic dubbed The Power Fantasy. After a brief look at the teaser, I knew I had to read it. I expected something in the same vein as some of the most spectacular superhero comics in terms of scale and power. What I got instead was captivating drama, teeth-clenching stakes, and rich character dynamics, all captured in a breathtakingly illustrated (as of writing...

Episode 4 of The Amazing Digital Circus: Fast Food Masquerade - REVIEW

Image
Episode 4 of The Amazing Digital Circus by Glitch Productions and Gooseworx gives Gangle’s character a deep-fried dive and a real bite into the cast’s inner workings! It also comes with a side dish of discussions on mental health and the horror of fast food service! While not as visually striking as the previous episode , ‘ Fast Food Masquerade ’ offers a lot in its character dynamics, comedy, and continued exploration of the show's existential themes. Episode 4 of The Amazing Digital Circus: Synopsis Episode 4 of The Amazing Digital Circus follows the players in a new player-suggested adventure in a McDonald’s-esque restaurant, Spudsy’s, where Gangle ( Marissa Lenti ) is made shift manager of their fast-food fantasy. As mundane as the adventure is, the players chafe against the soul-crushing crunch their adventure setting brings. Most of all, Gangle, outfitted in a plastic “happy mask, " grows increasingly manic and depressed as the adventure unfolds. Her mental state was ...

Superman (2025) Review

Image
Superman (2025), written and directed by James Gunn , has finally hit theaters. Prophesied and marketed as a fresh start for Warner Bros.' superhero films, this movie had a lot riding on its success. Is the film the return to form superhero movie fans have been yearning for from DC?  Yes, with a few caveats. Superman (2025): Too Much and Too Little?                Coming in at 2 hours and 9 minutes, Superman has a lot of ground to cover. Unfortunately, the movie suffered from what I could only describe as objective bloat, trying too much with not enough time. The film strived to achieve two goals:   1. Be a Superman movie 2. Kick off the new DC cinematic universe The movie achieves both, but it sometimes felt more invested in worldbuilding than telling a Superman story. The Justice Gang and the heroic world we glimpse were fun, but often at the expense of Superman himself. What we did see of Superman ( David Cornswet ) was fantast...

D&D Villains: How to Create a Good Villain

Image
D&D villains are tricky to write. A deadly but personality-less dragon will not leave a mark like a recurring bandit that your players fight repeatedly. So, how do you bridge that gap and create a strong antagonist that your players will remember? Here, we’ll establish design philosophies and provide tips on how to create a good villain. Fit Your D&D Villains to Your Player’s Play Style D&D is a game, so D&D villains should fit the kind of game you're running for your players. Every group will prefer to play D&D in a different way. Create villains that complement the play style of your players. Let’s use the pillars of D&D: “Exploration, Social Interaction, and Combat” as a starting point to show how you can design bosses around play styles: Exploration: “The Dungeon Mimic,” a living dungeon fused to ancient ruins that feasts on adventurers. The boss would be beaten by, essentially, just delving into a dungeon! Every puzzle cleared, piece of lore discovered,...

Image
The Amazing Digital Circus REVIEW - Episode 3: The Mystery of Mildenhall Manor       The Amazing Digital Circus , the juggernaut indie animation series created by Gooseworx and produced by GLITCH Productions , has hit its third episode, and boy, is it a spooky doozy perfect for the Halloween season! It's got scares! It’s got lore! It’s got discussions of body dysmorphia, memory issues, and trauma! And shotguns! What more could you WANT?!?        Overall, I would consider this the most mature episode we have seen (so far) in terms of subject matter and tone. Still, those facts only make for a more memorable experience that builds on the existential themes the show is building! Synopsis      The third episode of The Amazing Digital Circus follows the gang (sans Zooble) going on a horror-themed adventure in the ghost-infested Mildenhall Manor. This haunted mansion sees Pomni and Kinger trapped in the “Rated Mature” section,...
